Apple Releases OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion in the App Store

I haven’t had much of a chance to write the past few months (I’ll finally be able to later this week, more on that later), but I do want to mention that Apple has released OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion in the It’s $19.99 on the Mac App Store.

Apple had previously announced in June that we would see it this month, and yesterday during a financial call, they mentioned it would be available today. Everybody was expect soon, since the end of the month was coming up, although they could have technically released it next Monday or Tuesday and still met the deadline.

Anyways,it requires at least Mac OS X 10.6.8 or 10.7 and later and one of these Macs:

  • iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

With it comes Game Center, which opens up a lot of possibilities for Mac gamers who also game on their iPads, iPhones, or iPod touches:

The Mac is about to go up against iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch — in a friendly Game Center way. Now it’s a bigger playing field with even more competition. Just create a Game Center account with your Apple ID. Then sign in and you’re in. Friends will find you fast, and you’ll track them down easily. Get a multiplayer game started or go up against people you don’t know. Check out leaderboards and see how your high score ranks against opponents’ scores around the world. And discover new games based on the ones you and your friends already play.

Update: macOS High Sierra is now current (November 2017)
